Arogya Sandhan Charitable Trust (ASCT) was established in 2007 under the leadership of Mr. Niranjan Biswas, driven by a deep sense of social justice after witnessing the mistreatment of mentally challenged children. Following the inauguration of Arogya Sandhan Pathological Laboratory & Doctors’ Clinic in Kolkata, Mr. Biswas visited Guwahati on 29th June 2005, where he was disturbed by the inhumane eviction of two families—simply because they had special needs children. This painful episode inspired him to launch a public awareness campaign, culminating in a seminar on “Problems of Challenged Children and Role of the Society” held at Cotton College, Guwahati on 4th December 2005. Encouraged by the response and at the request of parents’ group PASS, Mr. Biswas approached the Government of Assam and successfully helped them secure land, which became known as the “Guwahati Model.” This laid the foundation for ASCT, founded with the support of Late Anil Kumar Jana. ASCT today runs a Dream Home at Arapanch Mission Gate, Sonarpur (South 24 Parganas), providing lifelong shelter and care to mentally challenged individuals, often neglected by society. Committed to independence and dignity, the Trust refrains from government funding. Instead, it focuses on vocational skill-building through its VTC – Arogya Sandhan Perfume Academy, which trains residents in meaningful, income-generating activities. As part of this initiative, ASCT has introduced practical training sessions such as how to make floor cleaning liquid, empowering residents and caregivers with the skills to produce and potentially market household essentials. These programs not only support the Trust’s financial sustainability but also foster self-reliance, confidence, and inclusion for those who need it most.
